Occlusion is the contact of teeth when two surfaces made up of the hardest tissue of the body come into contact with one another and their movement against one another. We do not think much about it when those surfaces move and contact in a coordinated way, because for most of us it happens spontaneously. If we are not hurt and chewing is functional, our brain is able to harmonize the movement of 32 teeth and dozens of muscles without telling us what they are doing.
However, this is often not the case because the teeth do not germinate properly, wear out, are affected by trauma, bacteria, and so on. In summary, tooth and bite are most negatively affected by caries (dental disease), periodontal (gingival) and bite problems (tooth wear, destruction).
